Summary

The Text Editors – Display page of the Preferences dialog provides controls and information related to text display.

Access

The Text Editors – Display page is part of the main Preferences dialog (DXP » Preferences) and is accessed by clicking the Display entry under the Text Editors folder, in the left hand pane of the dialog.

Options/Controls

Font

  • Change - Click this button to invoke the Fonts dialog to change the font used for text documents.

Visual

  • Visible right margin - Enable this option to display the right margin on the text document and you can adjust the margin width by entering a new value in the Margin width field. The right margin is for visual formatting and for word wrapping around margins.
  • Margin width - Adjust the margin width on the text document. The Visible right margin option needs to be enabled first.
  • Show Line Numbers - Enable this option to display line numbers on the text document. You can enable the Line numbers on gutter option to place line numbers on the gutter.
  • Line Numbers On Gutter - If this option is disabled the line numbers are displayed on a column next to the gutter, or click to have the line numbers appear in the gutter instead.
  • Show All Numbers - Enable this option to display all line numbers on the gutter. Disable this option and the only line numbers will appear for those statements that can be expanded or collapsed by these little boxes that have plus or negative symbols respectively.
  • Use Special Symbols - Enable this option and the special symbols such as the carriage return and end of line symbols are displayed. By default this is off.
  • Word Wrap - By default, word wrap takes place at the right edge of the Text Document window. If you want the text to wrap at at the margin or at the window, select one of the two options- Wrap at margin or Wrap at window.
  • Wrap at Margin - Enable this option if you want the lines to be wrapped at the margin line instead of at the window. Enable the Visible right margin and adjust the Margin width if you want the word wrapping to take place at a certain margin.
  • Wrap at Window - Select this option if you want the word wrap to take place at the right edge of the Text Document.
  • Indicate Modified Lines - Enable this option and the Text lines that are modified or added are now automatically highlighted with color markers in the gutter. Unsaved changes are indicated with red markers while saved changes are indicated with green markers - allowing you to quickly identify which text is committed. This option is enabled by default.

Syntax Highlighting

  • Use syntax highlighting - Enable this option to enable syntax highlighting. To set highlighting options, use the Colors page of the Text Editor and use the following buttons, Select Language and Edit Syntax to change the highlighting options.
  • Highlight brackets - Enable this option and the brackets in the text are highlighted, which is useful to identify opening and closing brackets in text.
  • Automatic delimiter highlighting - Enable this option to control whether matching pairs of delimiter characters are highlighted. For example, when this option is enabled and you close a bracket, the text editor will highlight.
  • Underline typing errors - Enable this option to underline typing errors if there is any.

Code Outlining

  • Use Code Outlining - Enable this option and a little box appears for each procedure / function / subroutine on a text document and each routine can be collapsed to one line or not by clicking on its little box. Use the Show Collapse Lines and Buttons on Gutter options to have more control over the Code Outlining feature.
  • Show Collapse Lines - Enable this option to show collapse lines.
  • Buttons on Gutter - Enable this option to show buttons on gutter.
