Vias and pads provide the vertical connectivity in the board design. As well as being used for the component pads and for layer changes along the course of a route, vias can also be used to stitch copper areas of the board, and also shield routes.
Altium Designer includes a number of tools that can be used for the placement and removal of extra vias and pads, including:
Via Stitching - place an array of vias across the entire board, or an area of the board
Via Shielding - place and array of vias along both edges of a route
Unused Pad Shape Removal - removed unused pad and via copper shapes on those layers that the via or pad is not connected to.
