Main article: Using a Private Server License

The security model for Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 2008 Server operating systems does not allow the icon for a Windows Service to be displayed while you are remote connecting into a computer that has that service:

  • Windows 7 and later – the security model does not allow the Altium Designer Private License Server to create a tray icon. In order to manage licenses, the server must be launched as an application.
  • Windows 2008 Server and later – when you connect to the Server through terminal services, the service is not allowed to interact with the desktop and therefore the service icon is not visible.

If you install the Altium Designer Private License Server on a machine with one of these operating systems, you will need to follow the steps below in order to administer the licenses.

  1. Stop the license service via the Windows Services console. Access this console from the Windows Control Panel by double-clicking on the Administrative Tools entry, then double-clicking on the Services entry.

  2. Launch the server in "Application mode". Open a Windows Command Prompt, then on the command line, type: "C:\Program Files\Altium Designer\DXPSecurityService.exe" /app (replace the drive letter and folder path as appropriate for where you have installed the Private License Server software). Ensure that the /app parameter is specified outside the double-quote marks, and that there is a space character between the " and the / exactly as shown. Note that you can copy/paste the string into a Command Prompt, using the right-click menu.

  3. The security server is now running in application mode and the icon appears in the system tray. Double click on the icon to open the Licensing dialog.

  4. Add your Private Server license(s) to the server – either automatically, through activation of the relevant licenses, or through manual addition of the relevant license files (*.alf), backed-up from a previous server installation. Configure the server, including license usage, as required.

  5. Exit the security server application by right clicking on the icon in the system tray and choosing Exit.

  6. Start the Private License Server service (via the Windows Services console).

Altium Designer clients are now able to connect to the Private License Server and use the Private Server license(s) added and configured for it.

If you see the message:

Windows socket error: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted (10048), on API 'bind'

This indicates you have the service running while you are attempting to run the Altium Designer Private License Server application. You need to stop the service while running the application and start it again once you have stopped the application.

The "C:\Program Files\Altium Designer\DXPSecurityService.exe" /app command can be made into a Windows shortcut. In Windows Explorer, browse for the DXPSecurityService.exe file in the Program Files folder, right click the file, and create the shortcut on the desktop. Access the associated properties dialog for the shortcut and edit the Target field to include the /app parameter.

You can also create a shortcut on the desktop to launch the Windows Services console, with the Target field set to C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmc.exe services.msc.
